- This file contains information on the Western Digital hard disk controller,
- model WD1002-WX2. The WD1002A-WX2 is the full size board, and the
- WD1002S-WX2 is the half-card. The two boards are architecturally the same.
-
- Western Digital currently has three EPROMs from the factory: 62-000042-01
- (ROM), 62-000042-11 (EPROM), and 62-000042-12 (EPROM). However, after
- investigating the history of the WD controller board, it becomes apparent
- that the original WD EPROMs could not handle some of the newer drive
- configurations. As a consequence, many of the suppliers in the marketplace
- used their own in-house EPROMs to handle the drives that they were selling.
- A goodly number of the suppliers simply enhanced WD's software so that all of
- WD's configurations would work as well as the added settings for newer or
- different drive configurations. An example of this technique is the EPROM
- supplied on the controller boards shipped by PC Source of Austin, Texas.
- According to Scott Watson of PC Source's technical support department, their
- in-house EPROM is configured the same as WD's 62-000042-12 EPROM. However,
- there are some suppliers who did not do this, and consequently, the
- information herein may NOT apply to your particular board/EPROM. Therefore,
- be VERY careful to check what you have before making any jumper changes based
- on this file.

- Note: the factory sets the jumpers in each case for the 10MB ST412 type
- of drive. Position 5 of SW1 selects IRQ5 (factory setting) orIRQ2, where
- 1=IRQ5, 0=IRQ2. Positions 6, 7, and 8 of SW1 are reserved.

- LEGEND: 1 = no jumper installed, ties input to +5vdc.
- 0 = jumper installed, ties input to ground.

- The following information is extracted from the Everex Winchester Hard Disk
- Owner's Manual and Referenece Guide, Version 3.0. As you will be able to
- tell very quickly, it does NOT parallel the Western Digital OEM information.
- This information is provided ONLY as an example of the inconsistencies
- involved in the WD controller for the end-user.
-
-
-
- The Western Digital 3.0 controller can be confirmed by making sure that the
- EPROM, located in the bottom center section of the controller, is labeled
- "3.0". This EPROM is marked as "U36".
-
- Setting of the controller for each drive's characteristics is done by the
- connection or disconnection of the traces marked E5 through E12, located just
- to the right of the EPROM. The trace connections E5 to E8 are used for hard
- disk drive #1. The trace connections E9 to E12 are used for hard disk drive
- #2. The trace settings for your hard disk are shown here:
